geomuseum monte arci
A small jewel of the local architectural heritage, the seventeenth-century convent of the Order of the Friars Minor Capuchin dominates the upper part of the village, distinguishing it from historical, artistic and cultural perspectives. Built just after the second half of the 1600s, it offered for centuries a meeting point between faith and science, history and innovation, inherited traditions and new perspectives.
Since March 2010, the upper floor of the Convent houses the Geomuseum MonteArci, a modern museum itinerary that, for the first time in Sardinia, reconstructs the geological history of the island and the volcano Arci through paleo-environmental reconstructions, multimedia technologies and a rich display of local artifacts.
Beyond scientific rigor and effective dialogue with visitors, the GeoMuseum delivers refinement by integrating the museum layout with the elegance and sobriety of the building. To achieve this aim, the project was entrusted to the companies ‘Interattiva’ and ‘Art Scenic’ and the museologist and museum system designer Roberto Concas, who completed the first part of the museum in 2010, featuring the mineralogical and paleontological collection and the evocative Sala Flu.
A further expansion came in 2014, with the creation of the Volcanic Room designed and set up by the synergy of Consulmedia and Lysandra’s Technicians: a multimedia room that narrates about climate, fauna and events of the Sardinian Miocene.
Delineated by a large space and small windows on the walls, the room that currently houses the Sala dei Minerali (Minerals Hall) was, in the past, the dormitory of the friars, with a long central passage and cells reserved for their rest. The current exhibition itinerary respects this original ancient function and naturally pays homage to it, aligning the exhibition modules so that they practically embrace the space of the cells, each with its own small window: an accomplished example of modern space integration consistent with the historical function of the venue.
The spaces available on the lower floor can accommodate temporary exhibitions, events, conferences or meetings. The GeoMuseum offers a broad and detailed training and teaching offering to schools of all levels, integrating geological and paleontological themes with naturalistic and traditional themes of the territory. And as such, the original ancient function of the convent continues: welcome, hospitality, meeting place of people and culture, for social and scientific growth.

From Cagliari: it is about 75 km from Cagliari. Take the SS131, continue towards the Mogoro Exit. Take the SP44, Ffter approximately 500 meters, take the third exit on the left and join the SP51, continue until you reach the town of Masullas.
From Oristano: it is about 35 km from Oristano. Take the SS131 until the Uras Exit. Continue on the SS442 up to the junction with the SP51, Turn right, go past the town of Siris and you have reached the town of Masullas.
From Nuoro: it is about 120 km from Nuoro. Take the SS131 DCN, direction of Cagliari/Sassari/Oristano. Turn right at the junction for Cagliari and continue on the SS131, go past Oristano and exit at Uras. Continue on the SS442 up to the junction with the SP51, turn right, go past the town of Siris and you have reached the town of Masullas.
With the Ferrovie dello Stato (railways system) you can reach the URAS-MOGORO train station, which is approximately 10 minutes drive from Masullas.
The nearest airport is Cagliari – Elmas, which is located approximately one hour drive from Masullas.
